An infection with the Zika virus during pregnancy can cause serious disturbances in fetal development. In 2015-2017, there was a major global outbreak of the Zika virus, and during this period, pregnant women were advised against traveling to destinations where the Zika virus was prevalent.
Zika virus still occurs in large parts of tropical and subtropical regions worldwide, but there are no current epidemics. The risk of infection with the Zika virus is generally considered to be small, and therefore the health authorities no longer advise pregnant women to travel to areas with the Zika virus.
